United States Armed Forces veterans are honored members of the community and because of their service to the United States, qualify for numerous special benefits such as veteran college grants. If armed forces veterans choose to go to college or university or continue their education, they are eligible for numerous grants, scholarships, loans or additional funding to help relieve their financial burden, so they can complete their education. Veterans from all the military branches are eligible for grants through numerous federal and state programs. After a veteran leaves the service, some educational fund grants do have a time limit so it is important to look into going to college shortly after leaving the military. The federal government offers the largest veteran grant programs but there are also veteran college grants state funded, offering their own grants and other veterans educational funding. When looking for funding, it is important for veterans to check with the state they live in to find grants and scholarships which can help reduce their college educational costs. There are special grant programs for veterans wounded in the line of duty or received those medals.
The North Carolina Vietnam Veterans, Inc. has grant and scholarship programs for Vietnam veterans and their families. To be eligible to receive grants or other funding, veterans and their families must be residents in specific North Carolina counties and the veteran must have a Vietnam Service Medal. All spouses, children, adopted children, foster children and grandchildren are eligible. Students can use the five-hundred dollar grant for books, housing, fees, or tuition for any study year.
The AMVETS Scholarship Program awards scholarships or grants to veterans or family members depending upon financial need, merit and academic excellence. The AMVETS National Scholarship Program for Veterans offers scholarships to veterans for full time graduate and undergraduate programs or in a degree or certification program from an accredited trade or technical school. The purpose of the grant program is to give financial help to veterans that are financially needy and require assistance to go to college or veterans that have depleted government aid. Each year AMVETS awards one thousand dollars for a four-year maximum, dependent upon showing evidence of enrollment and meeting the prescribed academic standards. AMVETS awards three nation-wide scholarships of this degree annually. Eligibility requirements include being a United States citizen and veteran, demonstrating financial needs, and if selected for the award, allow AMVETS to publicize your award.
Other veteran college grants include Child of Disabled Veteran Grant or Purple Heart Recipient Grant, which they award annually to a varied number of graduate and undergraduate students in public Indiana colleges. This award provides tuition assistance for disabled Indiana veteran's eligible children. It also provides assistance to certain public safety offices spouses and children if killed in the line of duty.
