International scholarships

There are literally hundreds of international scholarships offered that are either open or very specific as to what types of programs of study the are applicable for. Different international scholarships may also be for international students wanting to study in the United States or for American students that want to study abroad. When applying for an international scholarship is it important to note the difference as well as to ensure that the university, college or school that you have been accepted too is approved or accredited by the scholarship granting organization or committee. In some countries accreditation is not required or standardized between schools of higher learning so scholarship opportunities from United States awards may be limited.

International scholarships range from undergraduate to graduate level degrees, although most are at the graduate level. One such scholarship that is offered to students worldwide that are working on their PhD and wish to study in Japan is the Atsumi International Scholarship Foundation. These scholarships are for 20,000 Yen and may be awarded to any non-Japanese student that meets the criteria. Two American organizations, the American Institute of Architects and the American Architectural Foundation Scholarship work together to co-sponsor an international scholarship for postgraduate architectural studies worldwide.

The American Physiological Society NIDDK Travel Fellowships for Minorities is one scholarship that can be applied for by a variety of different educational levels. The program can be used by graduate or undergraduate students in biology and physiology that are also from an underrepresented minority. The minorities include Native American Indians, Native Pacific Islanders, Native Alaskans, African Americans and Hispanics. This scholarship is unrestricted both with regards for who can apply as well as where the school or program is located. There are several organizations and groups within the United States that offer travel fellowships or scholarships for students that want to study overseas or in another country. Often there scholarships are offered for programs that are limited in scope or availability within the United States. These scholarships can be used for tuition and school expenses and some may even include travel subsidies or accommodation.

The Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship offers undergraduates an opportunity to study in another country. This program is sponsored by the United States Department of State Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and is funded by the US government. Students applying for scholarships through the program will have the benefit of having a global education as well as learning another language and culture. Priority is given to students with financial difficulties and there are over 1200 scholarships of up to $5000 each awarded annually. Students that receive the grant can use the funds for any aspect of their international education including travel and accommodation costs or tuition and direct educational needs.
