What is the Pace of an Online College Like?

If you're like most people, you opted to take online courses instead of attending class in a real classroom for a very important reason: time constraints. The number one reason that people choose to participate in distance learning is because it allows them to learn at their own pace, and catch up on classes when they have the time to do so. With that said, it is a common concern for many distance learners that they may not be able to keep up with the pace of the class. Most of the time, online courses will allow the student to log in and watch the professor speak whenever it is convenient for them. Usually the professor will pre-record his or her lesson, or just save and replay the video from the class when it was being taught live in the classroom. This means that online students can log in and "go to class" when they are ready.

There will be moments, however, when live participation is required, such as live chat groups. The professor may want to hold an open question and answer session or have a discussion with the class at one time. In most cases, they will hold several scheduled chat sessions, so that the student can choose an open time that is best for them. It's important to look at the requirements of the class before you enroll just to be sure that the schedule will meet your needs. Another common question that many students have is whether or not they might be able to advance further along faster by taking an online course. Typically, these courses are still paced alongside those of the regularly scheduled campus based classes. It is a good idea to ask your University about the possibility of finishing up early before you begin the class, just to be sure. Online learning offers flexibility for those looking to free up some time in their very busy schedules.
