Computer Science Schools
Computer science schools, also known as computing and technology schools, are found across the United States as well as in most other countries in the world. Since most of these schools offer online programs at the Associate, Bachelor and Master level as well as online certification programs, it is possible to study at virtually any school from the comfort of your own home or office. This flexibility also is reflected in the various programs that often can be completed at the student's own pace, meaning that a degree can be completed on an accelerated program, knocking several months off the time it takes to earn your degree. Those students already working in the computer science field can often apply their current expertise and knowledge as well as the practical application of the courses directly to their job and to their class requirements.
Most computer science programs will start as general programs of study with advanced level training such as Bachelor and Master programs becoming more specialized. Certification programs are highly specialized and are often completed by professionals in the field that need to become experts in one specific area. General areas of study within computer science schools include systems design and analysis, databases, hardware and software, computer languages and programming, internet security, networking, e-commerce, web design, information systems, game design and network administration and management. In addition specialized programs in repair and hardware and software design are typically included in most courses. Knowing what area you want to focus on can be difficult, so completing an Associates program can help you sample classes from different specializations and help you decide where you want to specialize. Many students start by completing an Associates degree and then work up through a Bachelor and even to a Master level degree. Looking for a school that will offer all levels of training may be important if you want to continue past the basic degree.
Since the technology field and the area of computer science is constantly changing and evolving, working with a school and faculty that are leaders in technology is important. Research where graduates from the program find work, as well as what programs that that school offers to help graduates become established in the field. Work experience, mentorship or after graduation employment support is an important consideration in finding a job after graduation. In addition look for programs that are involved in research and development within the computer science field as that way you will be assured of understanding future developments and trends. Some computer science and technology courses also offer reduced rate or no cost courses for alumni, this is an important aspect of future professional development to keep in mind.
Students applying for computer science schools should have a good background in math, computer sciences as well as English and other core courses. Some computer programs may be funded through scholarships and grants or may even be funded through employers so be sure to check your options for funding when applying to different computer science schools.
