A Masters degree is granted as a graduate degree, typically for those who have already graduated with an undergraduate degree such as a Bachelors. Very similar to a Bachelors degree, the two main categories are a Masters of Science and a Master of Science and a Master of Arts degree. The time it takes to receive a Masters degree can vary anywhere from one to three years in duration, and sometimes more. At most schools, there are minimum requirements that must be met before students can enroll in the Masters program. It is the highest form of college degree aside from a Doctor's, so being sure students have met the necessary prerequisites is highly important. Typically, a minimum of 24 graduate course credits are required, sometimes more, depending on the particular program.

In order to receive a Masters degree, each school also has some other requirements including a maximum amount of time spent at the school before finishing the degree. In other words, most schools will not allow students to be enrolled longer than 6 years if they have not completed their Masters degree. In addition, many universities require an intensive exit test, and a thesis. A thesis is an intensive paper summing up all of the knowledge the student has gained in his or her chosen field. Thesis papers can usually range anywhere from 40 to 150 pages in length, and can often determine completion of the Masters program. In addition, foreign language requirements must usually be met, such as being enrolled in a minimum of two years' worth of classes in one particular foreign language, along with a demonstrated knowledge of that chosen language.

The competition within today's intense career and business marketplace is very stiff. If you earn a Master's degree, you will be held in a very high regard to potential employers. In fact, many higher paying jobs actually require potential employees to have earned their Master's degree. The difference between a Masters and a Bachelors is that the Masters is extremely focused on one particular area of study, including very intensive learning. That learning must also clearly be demonstrated to the professors and the school before the student can be granted the degree. A lot of hands on work is included such as field work, laboratory work, or internships to show students the real world applications of their chosen field, and to give them experience for the future.

While almost all Masters Degrees are usually earned in a classroom setting, more and more online universities are offering the programs up to students as well. In most cases, by the time a student is old enough to earn their Masters, they are working either full or part time, and may not have time to attend on campus classes in order to receive their Masters degrees.
